Climate and Water as Constraints to Production in the South African Sugar Industry

چکیده

Yield potentials for sugarcane in South Africa have in the past been defined in various ways. This paper attempts to draw the various definitions together and establish links between previous estimates based on growth analysis, whole plant carbon exchange and single leaf photosynthesis, with the now popular concepts of radiation use efficiency (RUE) and water use efficiency. Evidence from growth analysis experiments indicates that RUE in sugarcane is greater than that ofother C4 plants despite single leaf photosynthesis not being particularly high. Long term daily data from 32 meteorological stations in the SA Sugar Industry were processed using the CANEGRO model. Radiation-limited sucrose yield potentials varied from 22 t/ha per annum in the North to 14 t/ha in the South. Yield potentials were closely related to latitude and altitude through the influence of locality on radiation and temperature. Rainlimited potentials were 10 to 90% lower than radiation-limited potentials, depending on locality and soil type. Variations in age and season of planting and harvesting influence the environment experienced by the plant, and the effects of these management options on yield potentials is discussed.

Climate change would enlarge suitable planting areas of sugarcanes in China

China’s sugar production and consumption continues to increase. This process is alreadyongoing for over 15 years and over 90% of the sugar production comes from sugarcane(Saccharum officinarum). Most of the sugarcane is planted in the south (e.g. the Chineseprovinces of Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan) and it represents there a majoreconomic crop in these landscapes. As found virtually wo...

The Effect of South African Geopolitical Position in the Development of Cinema in South Africa

This paper will discuss about the role of the geopolitical location of South Africa in the development of movie and the cinema industry in this country. Despite of bringing ci-nema to South Africa by white Europeans, but the development of this phenomenon is mostly due to the geopolitical position of this country. It is interesting to know that ci-nema reached Africa in much the same time as it...

Monitoring sugar beet rooting depth irrigated with recycled waste water and different irrigation methods for water savings in an arid climate

ABSTRACT- A detailed understanding of crop rooting systems will facilitate water use reduction, optimized nutrient uptake and irrigation scheduling more efficiently. A field experiment was conducted during 2005-2006 to investigate sugar beet rooting depth growth, irrigated with three irrigation methods (subsurface drip, surface drip and furrow) and two water qualities (recycled wastewater: EC= ...
